Rocio Bauer’s profile over at WashingtonExec is worth your time if you’re thinking about what leadership looks like when you’re serving a mission customer through technology. She’s spent her career at the intersection of Army requirements and the platforms that have to deliver under pressure, and that dual fluency—operator and technologist—doesn’t come easy.
I see this gap all the time in searches. We’ll map a market for a program leadership role and surface candidates with either deep technical chops or strong stakeholder management, but rarely both in equal measure. The ones who can translate between the Pentagon and the engineering floor, who’ve earned trust on both sides, are the passive candidates worth the longer conversation. They’re not posting résumés.
If you’re building or rebuilding a team that has to deliver capability—not just contracts—to DoD customers, spend the time to understand what that bilingual leadership actually looks like. It’s the difference between a program that runs and one that stalls at the first RFI.
