Bridging the Gap: Tech Leaders Must Understand Mission in Defense

Rocio Bauer’s profile is a good reminder that the best technology leaders in the federal space don’t just understand systems—they understand mission. When you’re placing a CTO or a VP of Engineering into an Army-facing program, the résumé tells you whether someone can architect at scale. The conversation tells you whether they grasp what it means to serve the warfighter.

I see this gap all the time in searches. A candidate checks every technical box but can’t articulate how their work connects to readiness, lethality, or the operator downrange. That’s not a disqualifier early in a career, but at the senior level it shows up fast. The clients we work with—primes, agencies, and funded start-ups alike—want leaders who’ve internalized that technology in defense isn’t an end in itself.

If you’re building out a team or considering your next role, ask yourself whether you can tell that story. It matters more than the stack.
