Cleared Talent Must Adapt to Air Force’s Unmanned Future

The Air Force’s hunt for a Reaper successor tells you everything about where cleared talent needs to focus in the next three years. The MQ-9A performed well in Operation Epic Fury — the chief of staff called it the MVP — but the service lost airframes, the production line shut down last year, and the cost per aircraft can hit $50 million depending on sensors. That’s not sustainable in a high-attrition fight, so the Air Force partnered with DIU on the Massed Modular Aircraft effort: attritable, mass-producible platforms with open architecture, modular payloads, and a target IOC of fiscal 2031.

If you’re running engineering, autonomy, or program leadership in the unmanned space, this is your lane. The service wants 20 mission-ready aircraft delivered by 2031, full-scale prototype flight testing within 21 months of award, and a concept refinement phase kicking off first quarter of FY27. They’re applying lessons from CCA — including the Autonomy Government Reference Architecture — and they want both primes and nontraditional firms in the mix. The DIU solicitation closed in July; the April RFI on low-cost attritable ISR drew a strong response, and those efforts will likely coalesce into a single program.

The talent implication is straightforward: cleared leaders with track records in modular design, open systems, rapid prototyping, and autonomy software are about to be in very short supply. If you’ve delivered hardware at speed or stood up a new ISR capability under a compressed timeline, expect the phone to ring. The Air Force is moving fast, and the firms that win this work will need senior operators who’ve done it before — not just talked about it.
