Evolving Talent Needs in Defense: Adapting to New Technologies

The technologies reshaping delivery teams don’t announce themselves with fanfare. They show up in how fast a program office can spin up a secure environment, how a contractor team collaborates across classification boundaries, or whether a CISO can actually see what’s running in production. The real shift isn’t the tool — it’s that the tool changes who you need on the team.

I’m watching this play out in our searches. A program director role that two years ago called for acquisition and integration experience now wants someone who’s run DevSecOps at scale. A cybersecurity VP search starts with “must understand zero trust and software supply chain” before we even get to clearance. The candidates who land these roles aren’t necessarily the ones with the longest résumés — they’re the ones who’ve already made the adjustment, who speak both the mission and the technology fluently.

If you’re hiring or considering a move, the question isn’t what’s trendy. It’s whether the role — and the person in it — can adapt as the stack does. That’s the gap we’re mapping right now, and it’s wider than most organizations think.
