The question in that WashingtonExec headline is the right one, even if the page didn’t load. Most of the cleared leaders I talk to aren’t chasing the loudest vendor or the trendiest stack—they’re asking which tools actually let small teams move faster without adding risk. That’s the gap between what gets demo’d at a conference and what an engineering director with a TS/SCI team and a hard deadline will actually adopt.
The pattern I see in successful searches: the best operators have a view on automation, on how AI-assisted tooling changes team composition, and on where zero-trust architectures create friction versus where they solve it. They don’t need to be the ones writing the code, but they know what the tradeoffs are. If you’re hiring or being hired into a delivery or mission-systems role right now, that fluency matters more than the résumé bullet from five years ago.
