I spend a lot of time talking to CTOs and delivery leads who are wrestling with the same question: which bets are actually paying off in production, and which are still PowerPoint? The gap between vendor noise and what’s running in cleared environments is wider than most people think.
The technologies reshaping how teams deliver aren’t the ones dominating conference agendas. They’re the ones that survived contact with compliance, airgaps, and mission tempo. Infrastructure-as-code that works inside a SCIF. Observability tools that don’t phone home. Automation that doesn’t break the moment you layer in continuous ATO. If a candidate can’t talk about tradeoffs in that context, they haven’t done the work.
When I map the market for a CISO or VP Engineering search, I’m looking for people who’ve made those calls under constraint. The track record matters more than the stack, but you need both. The best hires know what to adopt early and what to let someone else debug first.
